The Spirit of Liberty

One of the most remarkable monuments on the grand mall of our nation’s capital is the Korean War Memorial. It pictures something profound in our national life, and it speaks to an essential dimension of our spiritual lives as well.

For those who have not seen it, the memorial has life-sized statues of a squad of battle-weary soldiers (or perhaps marines) ascending a hill though a series of rice paddies. The last member of the infantry unit is looking back over his shoulder, possibly at an emerging threat. At the top of the hill, where the squad is headed, is a broad reflecting pool. And engraved in the stone around it are these words: freedom is not free.

That theme reminds us of those who gave the last full measure of their devotion for our nation. And it reminds us that while the gift of eternal life is free, it is not offered without great cost, as Dr. D. James Kennedy shares in his message: “The Spirit of Liberty.”
