Reasons to Repent and Pray

by Dr. D. James Kennedy

I am sure we are all aware of the fact that America has many serious problems. Everywhere we turn, we are seeing an epidemic of drugs and alcoholism, rampant abortion, sexual promiscuity and STDs. Indeed, we see:

  • terrorists threatening our lives;
  • economic stagnation;
  • an educational system bent on producing unbelief in God;
  • corruption in business;
  • criminality;
  • the rise of euthanasia and assisted suicide;
  • films and television programs that promote wickedness;
  • a press that never seems to come down on the moral side of the issue.

If someone were to take the spiritual pulse of this nation, they might say it is at death’s door. Indeed, if it were a patient, it probably would have been pronounced dead on arrival—with no spiritual pulse at all. This is what many think, and for this reason many even rejoice!

As bleak as things might be, however, there is always hope because of the promise of 2 Chronicles 7:13-14. God says, “If I shut up heaven and there be no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among the people; . . .” or, (we could say), if I send terrorists among the people or any other calamity—“If my people which are called by My name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and will heal their land.” Each of us needs to carefully read this and each of us needs to do exactly what God says.

May we pray that God will speak to this nation, that He will awaken us to the dangers that we face, and that we may see that these things may well have come upon us because of our wickedness and because of our national sins. May we ask God to forgive this nation of its wickedness—as we humble ourselves and turn from our wicked ways—and may He heal this land.

Much is at stake. That is why each one of us must be much in prayer. God Himself has promised that if His people pray, seek His face, and repent, that He “will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Let’s do that. May we call on God, in repentance, to heal our land, and may we continue to do so until He does.

And, of course, it behooves us to put action to our prayers. We must take the time to learn where the candidates stand on the issues and to vote for the candidates most likely to work toward godly values. If Christians stay home this November, we will have no one to blame but ourselves for the disastrous election results that will follow.
