Defining Deviancy Down or Up

by Dr. D. James Kennedy

You have heard of the gay agenda. Let me tell you some of the things in their agenda. One of them is “DD Up” and “DD Down.” DD Down means “defining deviancy down.” The late Daniel Patrick Moynihan, in his study on this, shows that when deviancy becomes so prevalent in a society, societies tend to define deviancy down so they can live with it. Otherwise it becomes too uncomfortable to know there are that many perverts of whatever kind, who are living around you. So the American Psychiatric Society has defined it down until it becomes accepted as normal.

What is “DD Up” (Defining Deviancy Up)? It is taking that which has always been known as normal and defining that up into deviancy. Dr. Charles Krauthammer, who is both a psychiatrist and noted political commentator, says: “One way is denial: defining real deviancy down creates the pretense that deviancy has disappeared because it has been redefined as normal. Another strategy is distraction: defining deviancy up creates brand-new deviances that we can now go off and fight. That distracts us from real deviancy and gives us the feeling that, despite the murder and mayhem and madness around us, we are really preserving and policing our norms.”

So the deviant is declared normal and the normal is “unmasked” as deviant. Who are the new deviants? Heterosexuals, family members, fathers, ministers, and anyone who says that homosexuality is wrong or sinful.

Dr. Richard Isay, a psychiatrist and homosexual activist, wrote: “ . . . homophobia—the irrational fear and hatred of homosexuals—is a psychological abnormality. Those afflicted should be quarantined and denied employment. ”

We have a new deviancy: the homophobe. They are the deviants. They are the psychological abnormalities. “Homophobia” is now considered a psychological abnormality and those afflicted should be denied employment if they are psychotherapists and psychologists who are trying to help homosexuals toward normalcy.

Signs carried by homosexual demonstrators in the recent protest against us said, “Stop the Hate.” But they didn’t mention that they have threatened to blow me up with dynamite and throw AIDS-infected blood in my face. They didn’t mention the church in San Francisco where the pastor took a stand against them, and they fired gunshots through the window of his home and tried to firebomb the church. They didn’t mention how they banged on the locked doors of the church and beat on the doors crying, “We want your children!”

Did any newspaper mention the fact that on my initiative this church has given money to help people with AIDS? No, no mention of that.

We need to pray for them. We need to witness to them. We need to do good for them, so they may repent and experience the love of Jesus Christ and be transformed by His grace.
