President Ronald Reagan once said this of his political opponents: “It’s not that they are ignorant; they just know so many things that aren’t so.” Well before we laugh too heartily at that, there are many things we think are true that are in fact not so. For example, did you know that Napoleon Bonaparte was not short? He was actually slightly taller than the average French soldier. Did you know that Marie Antoinette never said: “Let them eat cake?” She was only nine years old when that phrase first appeared in the writings of Rousseau. How about the Great Chicago Fire of 1871? Did you know that Mrs. O’Leary’s cow did not start that fire by kicking over a lantern? A newspaper reporter made up that little piece of fake news, thinking it sounded more colorful.
As we can see, not much has changed in journalism in nearly 150 years. Well there is one other historical figure about which people harbor many misconceptions. But the real, untold story is fascinating.
