The Moral Law of God

Scripture: Luke 19:11-14

The German monk and protestant reformer Martin Luther offered a three-fold description of the law of God. Luther said the law was like a hammer, a mirror, and a whip. The law is like a hammer in that it smashes our self-righteousness as we realize that we cannot keep it. The law is like a mirror in that it reflects our sinful thoughts, and words, and deeds. The law is like a whip, Luther said, in that it drives us to the foot of the cross of Christ, as we grasp our need for a Savior, and understand that only Christ can take away our sin.

But there is much more for us to comprehend about the law of God. Did you know that there are three types of law mentioned in the Scriptures? Did you know that the law has a three-fold purpose—even for those trusting solely in the grace of God offered to us through Jesus Christ? Dr. D. James Kennedy explains, in one of his most insightful messages: “The Moral Law of God.”
