Keep Your Eyes on Jesus

Scripture: Hebrews 12:1-6

One of the most timely admonitions in Scripture is found in fifth chapter of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. In it he says: “Walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” Based upon the structure of the original Greek text, this verse could just as easily be translated as “walk with your eyes on the horizon.”

So, I want you to picture this with me. In order to be walking and at the same time looking to the horizons, what one thing must we do? Well quite simply, we must keep our heads up. We are to look up and beyond our present circumstances. We are to look up and beyond the individual trees to see the forest. We are to look up and beyond our own needs and consider the needs of others. And most importantly, we are to look up and beyond ourselves to the source of our joy, our strength, and our hope—we’re to look to Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith.

And this is not only a clear command of Scripture, it is also the secret of living the Christian life, as Dr. D. James Kennedy reminds us in his message: “Keep Your Eyes Upon Jesus.”
